Ariel 1930 Model G

Marque Ariel
Model G
Year 1930
cc 500
Engine 4 stroke single
Starting Kickstart
Gears 3 speed (with period Burman foot change modification)
Top speed 80mph ?
Notes This Ariel left the factory as a model G but has been modified over the years and no longer has all of the exotic parts that you might expect on a G.

It is currently undergoing a restoration. The engine had some faults and incorrect parts and just about everything needed doing on the G in general. The end result should be much closer to catalogue spec and hopefully everything will work as nature intended. The gear change will be going back to hand operation.

It went to G. R. Spencer in Market Rasen, Lincs on 14-2-30 with a quick action twistgrip and without a speedo. The original gearbox number was number 37489 but has been replaced with a foot change converted gearbox and is type QDH. If you have this original box please let me know! (see the factory record entry here)

Details

This Ariel represents the full maturity of the development of the Black Ariel (1926 - 1930) and is a very stable and refined machine. This G will be rebuilt in 2009/10 and will back to factory spec as much as I can manage. The build will be mostly a non-cosmetic restoration with the emphasis on usability.

I'm looking for parts to put the Ariel back to its G specification so if you have any of the following for sale please let me know... dave@barkshire.co.uk

  • Track Carb - AMAC 10MD (1 3/32")

  • Any 'type 10' engine parts

  • Left hand handlebar grip (it should echo the one on the right side)

  • Right hand side handlebar twin levers - Amal

  • Anything else that should be on a G

Comments...

  • I now have a Lucas H52 headlamp (and a Lucas SS49)

  • New silencers have been sourced from Jiri in Czech Republic and header pipes from Armours.

  • I have a new tool box from Derek Filer.

  • I also have a speedo which is being reconditioned by Paul Jameson.

  • The crank case is not the double roller type which the G should supposedly have had. Maybe they ran out of this part the day that this G was being assembled.

  • I have a high quality rear lamp replacement - Lucas MT210

  • The wheels have been rebuilt and lined. There are new brakes too.

  • The engine and gearbox are being rebuilt at the moment.

  • The horn should be a Lucas Spartan (do you have one for sale?)

Stop Press : April 2009, I have just acquired another Bare Bones project model G! This will help with the restoration.

This one has no known history since the factory records which show that it went to New York. The original gearbox, engine and frame numbers all tally with the records. It will take some further looking at before I notice everything that should be noticed but so far here are some observations and questions..... (please let me know if there are more)

  1. The front engine mounting plates don't have a loop for the dynamo
  2. The gearbox is QDH but doesn't seem to have its speedo driver unit
  3. The tank has been recently restored
  4. The magneto and carb are incorrect
  5. I can't work out what the factory record says (must look at the original)
  6. Are the hubs correct?
  7. Are the forks correct? (The spring is not)
  8. Will the engine giblets be proper G parts?
